The purpose of this website is to record the various traditions and folklore that surround the Kirksville area. Probably most well known as the home of Truman State University and A.T. Still University, Kirksville is also home to such supernatural items as the Dybbuk Box and the Devil's Chair.
Robert A. Geogres and Michael Owen describe folklore and traditions as beliefs or behavior passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or significance that originated in the past. They are often times seen as a pillar of the community which adheres to them, but that in no way means that they are unchanging. Due to the nature of most folklore and traditions primarily being passed down orally means that they will change and evolve over time. Some examples of folklore and traditions include holidays, festivals, history and stories.
