Charlotte's Ghost
With Kirksville being so full of oddities and ghost stories, it's no surprise that a fair amount of them are found on Truman State University's campus. There have been several stories in the Index covering Truman's ghost stories. A Student Advisor who works in Centennial Hall, Alex Clemens, told the story of the ghost of Charlotte in Grim Hall.
Charlotte Burkholter was student in the Grim-Smith Hospital nursing program who died over the winter break of the 1930-1931 school year. Several stories have popped up over the years as to how she actually died. One story reported by Truman's student paper, the Index, reported that Charlotte was supposedly diabetic and stayed at Grim over an especially harsh winter break. Unable to get insulin because of the storm she went into diabetic shock and died. Alex said she had always been told that Charlotte froze to death, her body found later in her chair wrapped in layer upon layer of blankets.
The ironically named Grim Hall is home to Charlotte, probably the most famous ghost on campus as she is the only one with an object to accompany her story. This object is a chair found on the fourth floor, is simply referred to as "Charlotte's Chair" and is supposedly where she died. Often used in their yearly Halloween haunted house, the belief is that is one were to sit in Charlotte's chair without verbally asking her permission, something horrible might happen to them. While It's a fun story and plenty of people have reported getting chills while sat in it, Clemens says that the the real chair is actually in storage in Grim's basement.
The story of Charlotte isn't meant to be particularly scary, but instead just more of a spooky tale to go along with the odd little residence hall. Some of the students in Grim even make door decorations for Charlotte's former room on the fourth floor.
